About MTAA

ABOUT THE MTAA

The Moy Tung Athletic Association (MTAA) is a federation of independently owned and operated Ving Tsun (wing chun) Kung Fu schools in the Moy Tung lineage, with the headquarters school being the Richmond Moy Yat Kung Fu Academy founded by Grandmaster Moy Tung, a Moy Yat Special Student Association (SSA) disciple.

The MTAA serves Grandmaster Moy Tung; member branches; Moy Tung Kung Fu Sifus, inner circle (MY3, MY4, MY5, +) & regular students; the general public and human society; and the Ving Tsun system, in these and other ways:

  • Organization & promotion of the growing network of schools in the Moy Tung Kung Fu lineage.

  • Organization & promotion of Moy Tung clan events and training programs, for the public, students & Sifus.

  • Information and resources on this website, KungFuHQ.com, for the public, and for members-only.

KUNG FU CONTEXT

Most importantly, the Ving Tsun Kung Fu system is passed on the right way, verbally and physically, by Grandmaster Moy Tung & the Sifus in his lineage, in and through the personal relationships between the people involved, and through Kung Fu life and training, besides regular classroom instruction and informal teaching.

On this website (and inside, for members), there are many videos and photos, and a great deal of text. These are useful for the public and Ving Tsun students in understanding Kung Fu, and getting the most out of the opportunities available for Ving Tsun training and education in the Moy Tung lineage.

However, authentic Kung Fu is passed on and received through spoken communication & physical presence/contact, and in authentic relationships between real live human beings, in addition to the many hours of solo training serious Ving Tsun students will put in with forms, and conditioning & technique drills.

If you’re already a Moy Tung Kung Fu student, you’re on a good path. If not, and you’re interested in learning more, the best way is to do an intro lesson at one of the MTAA branch schools. The Richmond Moy Yat Kung Fu Academy is currently accepting new students, and you can find a Moy Tung-authorized branch school or club in the MTAA Branch Directory.

MTAA HISTORY

Today, more than three decades after the founding of the RVA Academy, the Moy Tung clan has grown to more than twenty branches, with three generations of Ving Tsun Sifus teaching in the Moy Tung Kung Fu lineage.

With the growth of the Moy Tung Kung Fu family, the Moy Tung Athletic Association (MTAA) as a formal organization with a charter and website was launched in conjunction with the 2018 celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Richmond Moy Yat Kung Fu Academy - 1988 having been the Grand Opening.

The personal relationships Grandmaster Moy Tung maintains with his Simo Helen Moy & SSA Kung Fu brothers, and with the Sifus in his own lineage teaching in his name, and the Moy Yat name, have always been there — as have all the Sifu-student and Kung Fu brother-cousin-uncle-nephew relationships in the Moy Tung clan, and the Moy Yat Kung Fu family.

The longevity & strength of relationships are one of the remarkable things in Ving Tsun history and the MTAA. All of the Grandmasters in the Ving Tsun lineage had Sifus, and became Sifus themselves. Most Moy Tung Sifus have ten or more years experience training Ving Tsun Kung Fu in Grandmaster Moy Tung’s lineage. Many MY3 Sifus have 30+ years of Ving Tsun Kung Fu experience, and many of the MY4 generation Sifus more than 20 years.

These relationships and bonds are the heart and soul of Moy Tung clan Kung Fu. This idea of the importance of lineage and Kung Fu family will live on as long as the Ving Tsun system.

MOY TUNG KUNG FU HISTORY

Grandmaster Moy Tung began Ving Tsun training in 1980, in New York, directly under Grandmaster Moy Yat. On June 28, 1984, his Sifu’s birthday, he joined the Moy Yat Special Student Association (SSA) for disciples, with the traditional Bai Tze ceremony.

Moy Tung founded the Richmond Moy Yat Kung Fu Academy in 1986, at his Sifu Moy Yat’s direction, and for his name’s sake. From the beginning, his idea was to be a Sifu that trains Sifus to train Sifus, keeping true to the Ving Tsun maxim, ‘Ving Tsun Chuen Jing Tung’, or ‘Ving Tsun passing down the right way’; ‘the true system, unchanged by one’s own ideas.’ Kuen Kuit, p.82

Several of Grandmaster Moy Tung’s own MY3 disciples, with his encouragement and blessing, also joined the GSS; Grandmaster Moy Yat’s association for Grand Special Students. This is so they could train under their Sigung, Moy Yat, and spend time with him, getting to know him personally. Moy Tung’s disciples were the first and last to join the GSS Association, in the short time between when it was officially formed in the mid-90’s, Moy Yat’s formal retirement in 1998, and the passing of the great Grandmaster in January of 2001.

THE LITTLE BEGINNING IDEA

In the Yip Man-Moy Yat-Moy Tung Kung Fu lineage, it’s said the whole Ving Tsun system is in the Little Beginning Idea, the Siu Nim Tao form, and this is right. Theoretically, a human being can master the Ving Tsun system simply by training their Kung Fu through Siu Nim Tao practice.

In practice, no person has done this on their own, or needed to. According to the history of Ving Tsun Kung Fu, every master in the system’s lineage has had an authentic Kung Fu master as a Sifu, as well as training partners.

Still, Kung Fu mastery is up to the individual. No Sifu can hold a student back from developing their own Kung Fu to the highest level — or do the work for them. Once a student has learned Siu Nim Tao, the most essential secrets are out — but the highest levels remain secret until a student discovers and develops their own Kung Fu.

So, Ving Tsun is a good system, one that allows true masters of Kung Fu to emerge. A good Kung Fu family supports this, and it’s win-win-win for all involved, including the communities in which Moy Tung Kung Fu schools are planted.

If someone spend a year or two training Ving Tsun, they’ll get a solid foundation that will last for life, and they’ll have a lot of Kung Fu to improve and protect their own and loved one’s lives.

And, with Grandmaster Moy Tung and his MTAA, there’s also a path to Ving Tsun mastery, and the opportunity to become a successful Sifu and Moy Tung Kung Fu branch owner, serving the community with authentic instruction in the Ving Tsun system.

Wa Ha Jung Hung Fung - Ving Tsun Kung Fu is ‘for making the whole nation stronger.’
