WCI: MY3 Sifu Moy Lung Barry O’Brien Interview

Interview with Moy Tung MY3 Sifu Moy Lung Barry O’Brien, published in Issue 44 of Wing Chun Illustrated, October 2018. Sifu Moy Lung is also a grand student disciple of Grandmaster Moy Yat, and a member of his GSS Association for grand special students. He teaches the Ving Tsun system of martial arts, for fitness and self-defense.

While in the classroom I should always be sinking my horse and seeking to relax and minimize my use of energy. This is constructive Kung Fu. I am building and constructing a stronger horse and better relaxation because I am in a safe environment around people I know and trust.

However, destructive Kung Fu is totally different. It is destructive Kung Fu because I am trying to destroy my opponent and I am not concerned about how it affects my Kung Fu. If I am in a fight I’m not thinking about relaxing my shoulders or how low I am in my horse. I am not going to be in a constructive horse. I will be in a fighting crouch which is an instinctive position where you bend your knees in preparation for fight or flight. I will not be in a training horse because the horse is an attempt to create immobility.
