Maximize your human potential with Ving Tsun (wing chun) Kung Fu

In the Moy Tung lineage, we practice the Ving Tsun (wing chun) Kung Fu system. It’s a system for training one’s own Kung Fu, and can be practiced on your own, with very little space. Ving Tsun training includes a system of partnered-drills, but the solo practice and mastery of forms is of primary importance.

There are a total of just 6 forms in the Ving Tsun system, plus myriad conditioning drills that come from the concepts and techniques in the forms.

However, the first form (Siu Nim Tao) is the foundation of the Ving Tsun system and the most important form. This form and the basic drills (e.g. chain-striking), are the essentials for a great workout, and for the development of practical Kung Fu self-defense skills.

If, for an hour at a time, two days per week for a year, all someone did was the first section of Siu Nim Tao (Little Beginning Idea), as well as the chain-punching conditioning drill, they would develop a lot of Kung Fu.

You would have a strong horse, centerline awareness, and relaxed power. Strong legs that can keep you on your feet in a fight or if you slip; ingrained knowledge of your own basic human body mechanics, with hands that naturally protect your centerline for simultaneous blocking and striking; and relaxed reflexes for channeling power, from the ground, through your whole body.

The form of Siu Nim Tao is the most basic, and the most advanced. Siu Nim Tao is the foundation and end of the Ving Tsun system, and the most essential principles and understanding are developed through one’s own training.

Human beings benefit from group class training led by instructors, supervised by a qualified Sifu. If it’s your only option, doing live video sessions with a real person is better than trying to find your way through the system using recorded videos.

2018 Richmond Moy Yat Kung Fu Academy Anniversary - Celebrating Three Decades of Ving Tsun in RVA

For more info on what is taught in the Ving Tsun (wing chun) Introductory Course at the Richmond Moy Yat Kung Fu Academy (HQ school), see this article: What you learn in the Moy Tung Ving Tsun Kung Fu Intro Program: Techniques and principles for efficient and effective training and fighting.

Intro lessons at Moy Tung-lineage schools offer a great workout, plus a lot of practical information, but some people want more, so we offer the complete Ving Tsun system - all 6 forms plus the full Chi Sao system through Mai Sang Jong, as well as myriad conditioning/technique drills and practical applications.

In practical terms, it’s not possible for human beings to figure this out on their own from videos, and teach others how to work productively on the exercises. You really need regular training, over a period of 2-4 or more years, under a qualified Sifu, working with training partners at your own and other levels, to develop good Kung Fu and become expert in the system.

The Richmond Kung Fu Academy Store, MTAA store and MTAA branch schools do offer a wide variety of public and member-exclusive videos that are a training aid for those with the right foundation to understand and learn from the videos.

Moy Tung Number One Reason to Study Ving Tsun

Grandmaster Moy Tung: The #1 Reason to Study Ving Tsun

Someone can become an instructor and even a Sifu without first mastering the Ving Tsun system, which can take 5-10 years or more. However, mastering yourself and your own training is part of mastering Kung Fu, as well as being able to effectively pass the system on to others. It makes sense to learn Ving Tsun from someone who’s put in the time and effort to develop a good foundation, and learn the complete system. All the Sifus in the Moy Tung lineage have put years into Kung Fu training, on their own, with their Sifu and classmates, and with the greater Moy Tung lineage.

There are over two dozen Moy Tung Kung Fu schools around the US and in Europe, so there may be a branch near you. You may even want to move to be near one, so you can apply yourself to training. If your goal is to master the system and teach it, making a living from serving your community with instruction that develops life-improving and life-saving skills, this is a good move. You can also participate in live web video classes through many of the MTAA member schools, if one isn’t nearby, and travel or moving isn’t an option.
