1988: Moy Yat Seminar in Richmond, Va: ‘Wrong Bong Sao, Use Kick.’

Grandmaster Moy Yat visited Richmond, Virginia many times for seminars hosted by his SSA disciple, then-Sifu Anthony Moy Tung, now a Grandmaster himself. At this workshop, Moy Yat generously shared the ‘Wrong Bong Sao, use kick’ maxim from the Ving Tsun (wing chun) Kung Fu Kuen Kuit.

In this context, Moy Yat also recalled how he and his training partners learned the technique from Yip Man, footage that was later used in the Moy Yat video, “Yip Man.”

1984: Anthony Moy Tung joins Moy Yat SSA

“… after training and testing the Ving Tsun system and his own Kung Fu for four years, Anthony Bates joined the Moy Yat Special Student Association (SSA), his Sifu’s inner circle, on Grandmaster Moy Yat’s birthday, June 28, 1984.

“Anthony Moy Tung received his Kung Fu name from Grandmaster Moy Yat, who said it meant ‘Man from the East’, symbolizing his approach to training, and the character of his Kung Fu. Anthony Lewis Bates would soon legally change his name to Anthony Lewis Moy Tung Dandridge, to reflect this dedication, and also demonstrate the connection he felt to his maternal grandfather’s Richmond, Virginia heritage and lineage, while keeping the middle name from his father.”

From his first day, Dandridge recognized the power of Ving Tsun as a martial art, and he respected the authentic Kung Fu lineage of Moy Yat. At his first class, Grandmaster Moy Yat was away on a trip to Hong Kong, but that made no difference. He recalls the sound of the ‘Pak Sao thunder’, and being impressed at how smoothly the class was running in the absence of the Sifu. His only questions were, ‘How do I sign up?’ and ‘How do I start training?’
